Why “Eat Less, Move More” Doesn’t Work in Menopause (And What Does Instead)

If you’ve been trying to lose weight during menopause and feel like your body has stopped responding — you’re not alone. One of the most common pieces of advice women hear is “Eat less, move more.” But for women in midlife, that advice often backfires. Here’s why — and what to do instead.

Why Your Old Strategies Don’t Work Anymore

In your 20s and 30s, cutting calories and increasing your workouts may have worked just fine. But once you hit perimenopause or menopause, your hormones start to shift — and they affect everything from metabolism to mood to muscle mass.

Here’s what changes:

  • Estrogen and progesterone decline
These hormones help regulate insulin, appetite, and fat storage. When they drop, your body is more likely to store fat — especially around the belly — even if you’re eating the same as before.
  • Your stress response becomes more sensitive
Cortisol, your primary stress hormone, can increase with age and hormonal changes. And high cortisol = more fat storage, disrupted sleep, and increased cravings.
  • Muscle mass decreases
After 40, women lose muscle at a rate of 3–5% per decade (more after 50). Less muscle = slower metabolism = harder fat loss.

So if you cut calories too far and increase exercise too much, your body may interpret it as stress — leading to fat retention, exhaustion, and hormonal imbalance.

So… What Actually Works?

Let’s break it down into a better formula for fat loss in menopause — one that works with your hormones, not against them.

1. Eat More (But Smarter)

No, this doesn’t mean overeating. It means eating enough — particularly of the right foods — to keep your body out of starvation mode.

Focus on:

  • Protein at every meal to preserve muscle and reduce cravings
  • Slow-burning carbs like sweet potato, legumes, and oats to keep blood sugar stable
  • Healthy fats like avocado, olive oil, nuts, and seeds to support hormones
  • Plenty of fibre and colourful veg to nourish your gut and reduce inflammation

👉 Remember: under-eating raises cortisol and lowers metabolism. Nourishing your body is key to long-term fat loss.

2. Move with Purpose — Not Punishment

You don’t need to thrash yourself at bootcamp to get results. In fact, overtraining can raise cortisol, mess with your sleep, and make it harder to lose weight.

Instead:

  • Lift weights (or do resistance training) 2–3x per week to build muscle and boost metabolism
  • Walk daily — slow, leisure walking helps reduce stress hormones
  • Skip the extremes — long cardio sessions and HIIT every day are not your friend right now

👉 The goal is to train in a way that supports your energy, not drains it.

3. Prioritise Rest and Sleep

Fat-burning doesn’t just happen in the gym. It happens during deep rest — when your cortisol drops and your repair hormones kick in.

Tips:

  • Aim for 7–8 hours of sleep each night
  • Create a consistent bedtime routine (no screens late at night!)
  • Include daily downtime or mindfulness to reduce stress
  • Don’t underestimate the power of a good rest day

👉 Rest is not optional. It’s your secret weapon.

4. Balance Your Hormones First

If your hormones are out of whack, no amount of diet or exercise will fix the problem.

In fact, many women I work with are eating well and moving regularly — but still not seeing results — because their hormones are stuck in fat-storage mode.

That’s why the first step in any program I offer is a hormone health assessment — to identify what’s really driving the weight gain, cravings, fatigue, or mood swings.

Let’s Find What Works for You

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to menopause weight loss. Your body is unique — and so is your hormonal picture.

But one thing is certain:
The “eat less, move more” model isn’t the answer anymore.
You need a smarter, more sustainable approach — one that fits your body, your stage of life, and your real-world lifestyle.
