You’re exhausted, your sleep is all over the place, and your moods are like a rollercoaster. So, you do the sensible thing and go to your GP and get some blood tests – only to be told, “Everything looks normal.”
If you’ve been dismissed or confused by results that don’t match how you feel, you’re not alone. Many women in their 40s and early 50s face the same frustrating disconnect.
Here’s why it happens – and what to do about it.
Blood Tests Don’t Tell the Whole Story
It’s easy to assume a blood test can definitively confirm perimenopause or menopause. But here’s the problem: your hormones are in constant flux during this transition. That means a single blood test – taken on one random day – can’t capture the full picture.
Estrogen, progesterone, and even cortisol and insulin are on a hormonal rollercoaster during perimenopause. This hormonal interplay affects far more than just your period. It impacts your sleep, mood, memory, metabolism, and even your cardiovascular and bone health. So even if your cycle hasn’t changed much yet, you could still be experiencing significant hormonal shifts that aren’t showing up in standard labs.
Symptoms — not just test results — tell the real story.
Symptoms Matter More Than Labs
Perimenopause is what’s known as a clinical diagnosis. That means your age, cycle history, and most importantly, your symptoms are what really matter.
Common perimenopause symptoms include:
- Trouble sleeping
- Unexplained weight gain
- Mood swings or anxiety
- Brain fog and poor focus
- Irregular or heavy periods
- Hot flushes or night sweats
- Low energy or motivation
If you’re experiencing any of these – even with “normal” blood test results – you deserve to be heard.
How Long Does Perimenopause Last?
Perimenopause doesn’t follow a strict timeline. It can start as early as your late 30s and often lasts between 4 and 8 years, though for some women it can be even longer. It officially ends when you’ve gone 12 consecutive months without a period – that’s when you’ve reached menopause. But many symptoms can linger well into post-menopause.
Julie explains in Built to Last that the early stages of perimenopause are often missed or misdiagnosed, because women may still have regular periods but are already dealing with mood swings, fatigue, or disrupted sleep. These are the hormonal shifts showing up in real life – even if your cycle still looks “normal.”
What If Your Doctor Doesn’t Listen?
Unfortunately, some GPs don’t recognise the wide spectrum of perimenopausal symptoms — especially when your bloodwork comes back “normal.” If you feel dismissed, you’re not alone.
Here are some ways to advocate for yourself at your next appointment:
- Be specific: Track your symptoms over several weeks and bring a list with you. Describe the impact they’re having on your daily life, not just the symptoms themselves.
- Ask clearly: “Could these symptoms be related to perimenopause, even if my cycle hasn’t changed?”
- Request options: Ask about both hormonal and non-hormonal support, from lifestyle strategies to possible prescriptions.
If you’re still being brushed off, don’t give up. Seek out a GP who specialises in women’s health or menopause care. You deserve to be heard and supported.
